Why does it have to be either/or? Why can't we work on helping to improve economic conditions in poor neighborhoods AND making it more difficult for gang-bangers to easily obtain handguns? Both should be priorities!

5-Year-Old Boy Accidentally Shot And Killed By Twin

@Howmanytimes: Unfortunately probably not ALL NRA members or gun owners are as responsible as you seem to be. Further, the NRA does share culpability in this tragedy because it lobbies hard against any & every common sense handgun regulation that tries to prevent these incidents from occurring.

I don't suppose that any of the gun lovers who blog here -- most of whom live outside Chicago -- saw the new WGN/Chicago Tribune poll showing that 56% of city RESIDENTS APPROVE of Mayor Daley's efforts to limit gun ownership within the city? Anybody catch that? And since you all claim to be strict Constitutionalists & believers in Democracy, you'll support the wishes of this MAJORITY...right? Right?!

Chicago City Council Approves Tough New Handgun Restrictions

Chicago Gun Ban Reversal: Some Celebrate, Others Mourn (VIDEO)

"More guns equals to me more problems, more DEATHS, more funerals, more parents like me," said Chicago RESIDENT Annette Nance-Holt whose 16-year-old son Blair was killed on a CTA bus trying to shield a classmate from gunfire. "So who will answer for all the parents and citizens killed by guns and those injured by them?"

Chicago Handgun Ban: Daley Will Not Stop Fighting Guns If SCOTUS Strikes Down Ban

In 1995 Chicago, in order to help combat an epidemic of gang graffiti, instituted a ban on purchasing spray paint within the city limits. That's right: you cannot buy spray paint in the city of Chicago. Has graffiti been completely eliminated? Of course not. But it has been greatly hampered. The realistic goal is not eliminating all spray paint -- that's impossible. The goal is to make it as difficult as possible to commit a crime with a can of spray paint.

The same holds true for handguns. Those people with honorable intentions, who live within the city limits, can still own handguns. The goal is to make it as difficult as possible for those with malicious intent to bring guns into the city. Does Chicago's laws prevent ALL guns from coming into the city? Of course not. But does it make it more difficult for criminals in Chicago to obtain handguns? Yes, it certainly does. Can this be easily measured? No. But Chicago police agree that they -- and we -- are safer with fewer handguns on the streets of Chicago.

Stacy Peterson Search Comes Up Empty: Only Animal Bones Found

This headline is misleading. The police have not "come up empty". They have simply not been able to determine with any accuracy whether or not there has been any disturbed sites, partly due to bad weather, and partly due to lack of proper equipment on the scene. They will resume the search when the proper equipment arrives on scene. Then they will be able to make a definitive statement. They are guarding this very closely, which can mean that they don't want to give anything away yet. I hope they do find Stacy -- for the family's well-being. But if this doesn't turn out to be a valid search site, they will find her eventually I'm sure. Drew Peterson's ego is too big, and his mouth is too loose for him not to eventually give up where he dumped her body. He is a psychopath who belongs locked up for the rest of his life.

Sarah Silverman Calls Fox News A '24-Hour-A-Day Racism Engine,' Fox News Hits Back

Take for example her argument that Tea Party protests are a subtle form of racist behavior. Of all of the news footage or pictures that I have seen of any of the Tea Party protests, I do not recall seeing ANY people of color. None. I would agree with Ms. Silverman that it appears to be behavior that is subtly racist. Take another example that Ms. Silverman calls racist: The Birther movement. It has been factually proven that President Obama was born in the state of Hawaii. But Birthers conspiracy belief that he MUST not be President is a subtle, perhaps unconscious form of racism. Difficult to recognize as what we might traditionally call racist? Yes. But racist nonetheless.

Chicago Gun Violence Continues: At Least Seven Shot Overnight In Chicago

It's going to be a long, hot summer filled with violent deaths caused by handguns here in the city of Chicago. It's unfortunate that despite the epidemic of gun-related deaths, the pro-gun lobby continue to play dumb & blind to the violence. They will quote statistics, cite laws, and argue that their rights are being threatened. But when all is said and done, it just comes down to common sense. Is it ever okay -- EVER -- for an innocent child to be murdered by a handgun? No. There is NO justification for that. Ever.

Chicago's Image Problem: The National Media Focuses On Chicago Violence, But Is It Really That Bad? (POLL)

As a life-long Chicagoan who watches the news every day I can state this with confidence: CHICAGO HAS TOO MANY HANDGUNS ON THE STREETS. PERIOD.

When 5 year old children, sitting on their grandmothers front porch, get shot & killed: you've got too many guns.

More children were killed on the streets of Chicago during the beginning of 2010 than soldiers in Afghanistan! That is sickening. That is epidemic. But until children's rights NOT TO DIE are greater than the rights of Americans to own as many handguns as their homes will hold -- CHILDREN WILL DIE.

John Ardelean DUI: Judge Throws Out Bulk Of Incriminating Evidence Against Cop (VIDEO)

Travesty. Farce. Mockery. Take your pick -- they all apply. This is a complete and utter miscarriage of justice. This cop was caught red-handed on video doing shots of alcohol just minutes before he smashed into the car of two twenty-something young men and ended their lives. And surprise, surprise, he gets away with it in Cook County, IL. I have a bit of personal experience in this area, as I was hit by a drunk driver who was also allowed to walk away without punishment. Luckily, though very badly injured -- I survived. These two poor young men are dead because of the callous, careless disregard for the public safety displayed by the horrible cop. This is such a shameful example of the "blue code of silence" that cops & officers of the courts have used here in Chicago for decades, and sadly it still exists and injures the public that they are sworn to protect! Shame!

Tea Parties Protest Tax Day 2010 (PICTURES, VIDEO)

Look through these pictures of the Tea Klux Klan rallies around the country today. Notice anything unusual? NOT one single person of color protesting or speaking in ANY of the pictures. So where are all the African Americans? Asian Americans? Indian Americans? Hispanic Americans? One would think, that being a minority in this country, they would have some pretty strong opinions on taxation, immigration, etc. Yet there is not a single non-white person shown. This is about as close to a white-power movement this country has had in decades -- and it's disgusting. These people are terrified of change. They're terrified of the future. And they're trying to reverse it and go "back" to a time when women, minorities, and gays all stayed out of site and kept quiet. But it's too late. They cannot hold back progress. The Tea Klux Klan rallies are the last gasp of breath from a dying movement -- of white men being the majority and always getting their way. The end cannot come soon enough!

John Boehner Is Now Upset That The Health Care Bill Isn't Long Enough

Congressman Barney Frank appeared on the Rachel Maddow show last night. As they discussed the plague of hypocrisy currently affecting the GOP over the Stimulus, Frank stated: "I've never said this before about colleagues on the other side of the aisle but it's intellectual dishonesty. They want President Obama to fail". It was suddenly so clear: The GOP has no intention of debating in good faith. They no the exact conclusion that they want to reach before they start. So no matter what anyone else says or does, they will choose whichever course helps them achieve their desired end result of President Obama's complete failure as a leader. Progressives want to solve problems and make, well, progress. The GOP does not. They want to do everything in their power -- including lying -- to send this country back to an era when we didn't acknowledge gays, minorities, or women, and rich, old white men ruled everything and did whatever they damn well pleased. THAT is what all of these "debates" on healthcare reform, pollution caps, and jobs bills are all about. Congressman Frank boiled it all down to this very easy to understand point.

Steve Jobs: Apple Tablet "Will Be The Most Important Thing I've Ever Done" (RUMOR)

I remember about 10 years ago when critics were ranting about Apples demise. Steve Jobs was envisioning a small, lightweight, portable music player called the iPod. He approached all of the major music labels to seek their cooperation. They basically laughed him out of their offices. So, he did an end-around and started the iTunes store. Billions of downloads later, the record labels are STILL trying to catch up. Steve Jobs repeated this story when he proposed the iPhone. Virtually every major cellphone carrier told him he was crazy. Now of course they're practically soiling themselves trying to copy the iPhone. You see, Apple does not compromise their products. Are they the cheapest on the market? No, but that's hardly the point. They simply make well-designed, easy-to-use products that work, and work very well. If you want to be like everyone else and buy the cheapest netbook available; fine. But some of us prefer the value-added features that Apple has always included in all of their products since the first Macs.

Obama Finally Gets His Victory For Bipartisanship

I could not agree more. Some of the most dedicated Obama supporters I know are now losing faith! I am personally not ready to give up on him but he (and his advisors) have made some terrible decisions. Why? Are they afraid of the right? It sure seems so, as they pucker up and kiss the @$$ of every Republican't in sight. There is no one freer than one who has nothing left to lose. President Obama, his advisors, and the Democrats in Congress need to "man-up" so-to-speak and start showing some backbone! Will the right wing scream? Yes, but they've been screaming anyway. Let 'em. Too bad. We won. They lost. They screwed things up and it should be OUR time to have it our way for a change! If not, maybe they should just call it quits and let some more people like Rep. Anthony Weiner and Rep. Alan Grayson take the lead. At least THEY aren't afraid!
